The Lower Box is an advanced
adventure. Both sections of the Piedra River (the upper & lower
boxes) are the most highly restricted and regulated rivers in Colorado.
Who: Ages 16 and up!
When: Mid May- Early July
Launch Days: Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday
Meet Time: 9:00 AM
Return Times: 3:00 PM

Itinerary**
- Meet at the Piedra River Store at 9:00 AM or our Durango Office at 7:30 AM
- Check in, sign release forms, get dressed for the river! Wetsuits and Booties rentals are required all season. For more on what to wear click here.
- Shuttle to river for safety orientation.
- Hit the river!
- Enjoy class II & III rapids as a warm up!
- Hit class IV "Big Drop rapid".
- Bounce through more class II+ rapids.
- Scout & thread "Eye of the Needle" another class IV+.
- Scout (with possible portage) "Mud Slide" rapid a class IV+ or Class V (at high water).
- Finish your morning with "Climax" rapid, your final class IV of the day!
- Devourer a delicious riverside lunch and soak in the natural hot springs.
- Get back on the river for more class II+ action
- Relax and enjoy the breathtaking wilderness
- Take out and shuttle back!
- Arrive back to your car at approximately 3:00 PM.

What to Bring and Wear:
- Wear: nylon shorts, swimsuit and shoes that can get wet (no flip flops).
- Wetsuit: Required.
- Bring: Sunscreen sunglasses, water bottle, hat, dry clothes for the ride home and most importantly your sense of adventure!
- Over Night Trips: hiking shoes, tent, sleeping bag, pad (rentals available for camping equipment), warm clothes for in camp, toiletries.
