Upper Animas One Day Needleton Section Information |
Conquer non-stop class II and III rapids with intermittent class IV and one class V rapid. Creeks and streams cascade into the river as you continuously paddle. Travel by historic railroad into the heart of Colorado's largest wilderness area to access and depart this adventure. This is the friendlier section of the Upper Animas, but all participants must be a strong swimmer and able to paddle while the boat bounces, spins and submerges.
Who: High Water Levels (May-June): 16 & Up
Lower Water Levels (July-Early August): 14 & up
When: Late May- Early August
Launch Days: Tuesday, Thursday & Sunday
Meet Time: 8:00 AM
Return Times: 5:30 PM

Itinerary**
Day Before Your Trip:
- Meet at our Durango Office at 5:15 PM
- Check in, sign release forms, get dressed for the river!
- Depart for you MANDATORY river orientation.
- Return back to the office at approximately 7:00 PM
Day Of Your Trip:
- Meet at our Durango Office at 9:00 AM
- Shuttle to the Rockwood train station
- Board the train for your trip from Rockwood to Needleton.
- Descend from the train and get suited up for your river trip! Wetsuits and Booties rentals are required all season. For more on what to wear click here.
- Hit the river!
- Enjoy continuous class III rapids as a warm up!
- Scout "Broken Bridge" a class V rapid and run it!
- Hit more continuous class III rapids
- Stop out for a hearty riverside lunch
- Hurry back on the river for even more class III rapids
- Scout & run "Tank Creek
- Run your final class IV rapids "Specter" and "The Narrows"
- Arrive at the Tacoma Power Station, take out, de-rig boats for the train
- Board the Train and relax as you take in the sites of the Rockwood Gorge
- Arrive at the Rockwood Station, and shuttle back to Durango
- Arrive back at our Durango office at approximately 6:00 PM.

What to Bring and Wear:
- Wear: nylon shorts, swimsuit and shoes that can get wet (no flip flops).
- Wetsuit: Thermal Wetsuit Required.
- Bring: Sunscreen, sunglasses, water bottle, hat, dry clothes for the ride home and most importantly your sense of adventure!
- Over Night Trips: Hiking shoes, tent, sleeping bag, pad (rentals available for camping equipment), warm clothes for in camp, toiletries.
- Fishing Equipment: You will need to bring your own fishing equipment, as well as purchase your Colorado Fishing license before your rafting trip. Fishing Licenses can be obtained at most sports goods stores or the City Market's in Durango.
